Market Bag: Food prices trending up at Coronation
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Food prices are trending upwards at the Coronation Market in downtown Kingston.
Among the items attracting higher prices this week are sweet pepper, which is being sold for $250 a pound compare to $200 last week; lettuce at $400, up from $300 last week; and sweet potato, which is going for $100 versus $80 during our last visit seven days ago.
Popular vendor Richard ‘The Bammy King’ attributes the price increases to supply constraints.
“The market is taking time (going up) …everything is trending up because as crops get smaller in quantity, prices go up,” he said.
OBSERVER ONLINE reporter Kelsey Thomas went to the market with a budget of $2,500 this week. Check out what she could afford.
