Ikebana International Turns 50
Ikebana International Jamaica – St Andrew Chapter 156 is 50! The non-profit cultural organisation dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Ikebana, the Japanese art of arranging flowers, hosted its golden jubilee celebration Saturday last at The Liguanea Club.
Formalities included opening remarks from Chair Vivian Crawford, the President’s Message from Helen Chen as well as video demonstrations of the most popular schools of Japanese floral arrangement notably Ohara, Ikenobo, Sogetsu and Ichiyo. Facilitators of the three video presentations were Stephanie English, Susan Cano and Elaine Jo.
Guest speaker Deputy Consul General of the Consulate General of Japan in Jamaica Ken Nakamura welcomed all on behalf of the Japanese embassy, underscoring the importance of the Ikebana practice and the role it plays in uniting different cultures.
Dr Pauline Milbourn, in her vote of thanks expressed delight at the turnout and invited guests to view the visually appealing exhibits.
Ikebana International was founded in Tokyo, Japan, in 1956 by the late Ellen Gordon Allen and today boasts over 8,000 members in more than 50 countries. The organisation is administered by enthusiastic volunteers of different nationalities and Ikebana schools. Ikebana International creates a space for individuals to share their inspirations, styles, philosophy, history and techniques whilst connecting with Japan.
