Herbert Morrison clip Cornwall College for basketball crown
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Herbert Morrison Technical held off rivals Cornwall College to win Friday’s rescheduled ISSA/Western Conference Under-15 basketball title in a tight 36-32 finish at Herbert Morrison Technical.
The game was originally set for Wednesday afternoon but was washed out as the two teams played out a third nail-biting game of the season with very little between them.
Herbert Morrison won two of the three meetings, including the decisive third game which came in the final, by a total of six points after Cornwall College had won the first meeting by four points.
Joshua Ferguson had a Man of the Match performance on Friday, leading all scorers with 27 points including three of his five three-pointers in the crucial third quarter.
Herbert Morrison led by one point, 11-10, after the first quarter and maintained that margin 15-14 at half-time before before creating some space in the third quarter during which they outscored Cornwall 12-6 to lead by seven points going into the final period.
Led by Matai Williams who had 15 points and 13 steals, Cornwall College rallied to tie up the scores at 30-all with just about four minutes to go, but another three-point basket from Ferguson gave Herbert Morrison some breathing room as they held on to win the title.
Jonathon Grizzle, Timothy Garvey and Kamau Dennis combined for nine points to assist Ferguson while Dejeaun Williams scored six points for Cornwall College, Stephen Eunis scored five points and had six blocked shots, and Tyreeke Mowatt scored four points, five rebounds and four steals.
