Mural promoting fathers reading to their children being unveiled Sunday
A mural commissioned by the Ministry of Education to promote the importance of fathers reading to their children is to be unveiled on Church Street, downtown Kingston, on Sunday, Fathers’ Day.
The mural will be part of the Fathers Read Too campaign to be launched by Education Minister Fayval Williams on June 19 in partnership with UNICEF and the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC).
Kingston Mayor Delroy Williams told Tuesday’s council meeting of the KSAMC that the mural, near the corporation’s headquarters, is nearing completion.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Education told the Jamaica Observer that the campaign is being promoted as the minister “believes that fathers who read to or with their young children positively impact them in so many ways. It helps them to read better, know more words, and they are better able to communicate,” the spokesman said.
The Fathers Read Too campaign will also include a series of videos of fathers talking about the importance of reading and radio interviews.
Reading resources will be promoted on the Jamaica Library Service and UNICEF website.
Anthony Smith, the artist painting the mural, told the Observer that fatherhood was multidimensional.
“A father needs to have vision for his children,” he said.
