Sebert Walker Jr stays ahead of field in golf trials
Sebert Walker Jr dropped six shots at the end of the third day of the Jamaica Golf Association’s (JGA’s) National Senior Trials at the Half Moon Golf Course in St James on Saturday, but still leads his 18 challengers.
Walker Jr’s scorecard was littered with bogeys and just one birdie to end the day on six over par 78 for a three-day total of two under par 214. That puts him at four shots ahead of last year’s trials winner, Justin Burrowes. The bogeys were recorded on holes one, three, six, seven, 10, 11 and 13, while the sole birdie was posted on hole number 12.
“The round today was a little bit rougher day. It was a slower start but overall I still felt pretty good in my game. I just took a little bit of time to adjust to the greens or pretty much took the whole day to adjust to the greens here at Half Moon versus Cinnamon Hill.
“So, that played a big part in my going a few more over than I would have liked but I can’t complain its still decent playing for me and I just have to adjust and go out there and perform a little better tomorrow,” said Walker Jr.
Burrowes, on the other hand, posted his best score to date. He shot one under par 71 to be the only player to post an under par score on the day. His four birdies were made on holes three, 10, 12 and 15 while his three bogeys were on holes four, five and 11. Burrowes ended day three just four shots off the lead after trailing by 11 shots at the end of day two.
Veteran Owen Samuda moved up to the number three spot on the back of his two over par 74 but is currently 14 shots off the lead, with his combined score of 228 after shooting three over par 75 and seven over par 79 on day one and two, respectively.
Junior golfer Ryan Lue dropped from third to fourth place at the end of day three. He shot six over par 78 for a three day total of 14 over par 230 but just two strokes behind Samuda’s third place.
Former national golf champion William Knibbs moved up one place and is now in fifth position. He posted his best score to date of one over par 73 and is now just one shot behind Ryan Lue with a combined score of 231 (83, 75, 73).
Rocco Lopez, who occupied the third spot on day one, ended day three in sixth place with scores of two over par 74, nine over par 81 and seven over par 79 for a total score of 18 over par 234.
The golfers will play their fourth and final day at Half Moon Golf Course with the top three teeing off at 10:00 am today.
