Emmanuel Christian Academy hold slim lead over Sts Peter & Paul in JIS Prep Schools’ Championship

Emmanuel Christian Academy hold slim lead over Sts Peter & Paul in JIS Prep Schools’ Championship

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Emmanuel Christian Academy (ECA) held a slim lead over Sts Peter & Paul (STPP) after day one of JISA/Little Caesars National Prep Schools’ Track & Field Championship being held at the National Stadium in Kingston.

The two-day meet returned on Friday after a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will conclude today with the staging of the Boys 4x200m Relay Open final.

After 11 events scored, ECA had amassed 67 points, with St. Peter & Paul close behind on 62.5.

Mona Prep and Our Lady of the Angels (OLA) were tied on 39.5 points with reigning champions Hydel rounding out the top five on 37 points.

STPP created history when they claimed gold in the Mixed 4x200m Open which was being contested for the first time at the championships. Anchored by Jermaine Gonzales Jr, the son of the former Jamaican Olympian Jermaine Gonzales, STPP established a record of 1:58.58 to take the gold medal with Stella Maris running 2:05.08 for the silver and Our Lady of the Angels running 2:08.41 for the bronze.

Jurne’ A Davis of Mona Prep was one of the outstanding performers on day one as she took the Class 2 Girls Long Jump with a best of 4.30m (+3.6m/s) ahead of the ECA pair of Micah McIntyre with 3.66m (+2.1m/s) and Samara Wellington with 3.53m (+4.4m/s), before returning to win Class 2 Girls 100m final in 14.65s, ahead of Alzeliha Allen Richmond Park in 14.95s and Anya Johnson of STPP in 15.05s.

The outstanding performance on the boys’ side came from Caleb Taylor of ECA, who was also a double gold medal winner on the day.

He won his first gold medal when he clocked 12.90s to take the Class One Boys 100m final just ahead of Khalead Johnson of St Hugh’s, who was second in 12.93s. Rushaun Dunn Morris Knibb was third in 13.29s.

Taylor then won gold in the Class 1 Boys Long Jump with a best of 4.90 (+3.0m/s) ahead of Micah Simpson 4.54m (+1.8m/s) of St Theresa and Divondrae Matthews 4.36 (+1.9m/s) of Hydel.

In other completed finals on day one, the Boys’ High Jump Class 2 went to Jesse-Joel Ingram of OLA who won on countback ahead of Hassan Groves of Hydel and his teammate Jourdaine Burke as they all had a best of 1.15m.

The Boys High Jump Class 1 went to Khalead Johnson of St Hugh’s Prep with 1.50m, Joshua Scott ECA was second with 1.35m and Rajeve Allison of Hydel was third, also with 1.35m.

The Class 3 Girls 100m final was won by Anastassia Riley of Lannaman’s in 15.55s, Alayna Rodney of St Theresa was second in 16.03s and Gabrielle McIntosh of St Andrew was third in 16.21s.

The Class 3 Boys’ 100m final went to Rushawn Edwards of Lannaman’s in 15.49s, Matthew Barnett of ECA was second in 15.62s, while Immanuel Purser of OLA was third in 15.93s.

The Class 2 Boys’ 100m final went to Reece Condison of Sts Peter & Paul with 14.26s, while his teammate Zachary Hunter was second in 14.59s. Najay Scott of St Theresa was third in 14.89s.

The Class 1 Girls 100m final was won by the outstanding Gabrielle Morgan of Hydel in 13.58s, ahead of the ECA pair of Mikal Rose in 13.89s and Abigail Brown in 14.00s.

Day 2 is slated to begin at 9:30 am with the preliminary round of the Class 1 Girls 4x100m relay.
