WATCH: Go Wild Ja — The Jamaican Owl
KINGSTON, Jamaica — For the final episode of Go Wild, it’s only natural that we visit an animal that can only be found in Jamaica.
This week, Hope Zoo Curator Joey Brown introduced OBSERVER ONLINE reporter Kelsey Thomas to the Jamaican Owl, which can be found all across the island — typically closer to the coasts.
Like all native bird species, the Jamaican Owl is a protected species which means it is illegal to hunt and have them as pets.
Did you know that the population level of the Jamaican Owl is actually classified as vulnerable?
According to Brown, the biggest threat to their existence is poison bait for rats and rodents which are their primary diet.
Brown shares that there is still not a lot known about the Jamaican Owl so they may be endangered.
