Lyssons top them all in National Primary Champs

LYSSONS produced a high-class team performance to amass 208 points and claim the 2022 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Primary Schools Athletics Championships, which ended at the National Stadium on Saturday.

The eastern region champions weathered the storm from central region winners Greater Portmore, who started the day in the lead. It was a battle royale between the two in the last six events.

At one stage Lyssons and Greater Portmore were locked at 163 in the overall combined point standings. But Lyssons ultimately capitalised on two events in which Greater Portmore had no entry to pull away to victory.

Following Lyssons in the combined points standings were Greater Portmore with 191 points, Naggo Head (166), Spanish Town (117), St Richard’s (87), Corinaldi Avenue (66), Harbour View (66), Windward Road (59), John Mills (49.50), and Angels (36).

Greater Portmore won the girls’ section with 100 points, ahead of Lyssons (93), Naggo Head (64), Corinaldi Avenue (51), Windward Road (50), and Spanish Town (44).

Lyssons captured the boys’ section with 113 points, ahead of Naggo Head (102), Greater Portmore (90), Spanish Town (83), St Richard’s (51), and Harbour View on 35 points.

Lyssons walked away with $500,000 top prize, Greater Portmore, $250,000, and Naggo Head $200,000, while schools placed fourth to 10th received $100,000.

Teixiera Johnson from Exchange Primary, who broke the Class Two girls’ 300 metres record in outstanding fashion on Friday, was the overall champion in the girls’ category.

There was a three-way tie among Yohance Carty from Lyssons, Mario Ross from Lyssons, and Jordan Fenton from Spanish Town for the overall boys’ champion.

On Saturday, Khayla Senior from Lyssons won the Class One girls’ 200m in 28.20 seconds, ahead of Tracia-Ann Grant from Greater Portmore (28.80) and Ciara Williams from Holy Rosary (28.87).

The irrepressible Johnson won the Class Two girls’ 200m final in 27.55 seconds, ahead of Adrianna Harris from Seaforth 28.63.

The Class Two boys’ 200m was won by Tyler Morgan from St Richard’s in 27.09 seconds, ahead of Omeco Hanclewood (27.22), and Joshuah Lewin from Cresent (28.27).

Mario Ross from Lyssons completed the Class One boys’ sprint double by winning the 200m final in 26.45, ahead of Diwayne Sharpe from Waterford (26.87) and Andre Boyd (27.13).

Yohance Carty won the 800 metres for boys in 2:22.44 minutes, ahead of Oniel Heron from Frankfield (2:23.65) and Jelani Brown from Time and Patience (2:24.47).
