Comets International honours DQ and VCB
ICONIC Jamaican sprinters and Olympic champions Donald Quarrie and Veronica Campbell Brown will today be honoured by Comets Club International at a formal affair to be held at Antun’s Banquet Hall in Queens Village, New York.
Comets Club International, formerly Montego Bay Comets Athletics Club, are celebrating their 45th anniversary. The club will confer Lifetime Achievement statuses on the athletes at the grand reunion and awards gala.
Quarrie won the 200m gold medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada, while Campbell Brown, who won 19 Olympic Games and World Championships medals, claimed the women’s 200m at the 2004 Athens Olympics. She retained her 200m title four years later in Beijing, China.
“It is safe to say there is not a substantial discussion on track and field athletics in Jamaica without some mention of the names Donald Quarrie and Veronica Campbell Brown, and so we are delighted that they have accepted our invitation to be recognised at this time,” Michael Campbell, a former manager/coach of the running club in Montego Bay and now the international president, was quoted to have said in a release from organisers.
