WATCH: Man dies after being beaten by crowd in Mandeville
MANCHESTER, Jamaica — Manchester police are probing the death of a man after he was allegedly beaten by a crowd of people in the town of Mandeville mid-afternoon on Friday.
Police have not yet released the man’s identity.
Head of the Manchester police, Superintendent Lloyd Darby told OBSERVER ONLINE that officers were on foot patrol in the town when they saw the crowd.
“The crowd accused the man of stealing and the police realised that he had blood around the area of his nostrils,” said Darby.
The injured man was taken to the Mandeville Regional Hospital where he died.
Superintendent Darby is appealing to anyone with information that can help police in their investigation to come forward.
A woman who claimed she heard when the man was being beaten told OBSERVER ONLINE that the incident started on lower Manchester Road.
“Mi hear when him a get lick and the uproar from people. Mi just hear the whole heap a noise,” she said.
A bystander who asked not be named said a taxi operator accused the man of robbery.
A video, which has gone viral on social media, shows the injured man lying on a sidewalk surrounded by a crowd of people hurling robbery accusations.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the man is a member of a school board in southern Manchester.
