Fringe Benefits
The advent of the novel coronavirus spawned quite a few trends that hark back to the Roaring ‘20s and the ‘80s decade of excess. One such is the fringe, which has been fully embraced by local designer Nickishia Baylis, lead designer for Zephaniah by Nickishia Baylis, whose latest collection features fringes on both dresses and accessories
“I drew inspiration,” she shares with Tuesday Style Fashion (TSF), “for the Fringe Collection from the uncertainty associated with COVID-19. The coming and going of new variants and threats of lockdown made it almost impossible to plan for the future. We craved movement.”
“Although it may seem that, much like fringed hemlines, we’ve all come undone in
this pandemic, this fashion trend reminds us to look ahead,” Baylis suggests.
Indeed, the collection spotlights her handcrafted fringe designs on otherwise simple silhouettes. Think: Form-fitting skirts and dresses with playful fringe details flitting about the wearer as she walks or dances. There’s more fringe movement, too, courtesy of clutches and earrings.
Baylis’s collection reveals a tangible desire to be in motion. Quite apropos for the current mood.
