Barbados presses ahead with efforts to remove Queen as head of state
Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley has
said she will meet with members of the transition committee as the country
progresses with efforts to remove Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State.
Mottley made the announcement during a
sitting of the House of Assembly on Monday (March 22).
“I hope also to meet with the
Transition Committee to the Status of Republic this week, and I will be in a position to better
update the country after meeting with that committee and to let others know
what arrangements will be put in place as we go forward,” said Mottley.
Mottley also used the occasion to share
that discussions were likely to take place surrounding the renaming of Queen’s
Park, located in the island’s capital.
According to Mottley, her
administration will make details about the island’s republic status available
to the public shortly.
During a Throne Speech in September
2020, Mottley announced the island would be replacing the monarchy with a
Barbadian head of state.
Barbados said it intended to become a
republic by November 2021.
