Cayman’s millennials shy away from COVID vaccine
Cayman’s chief medical officer, Dr John Lee, has revealed millennials and Gen-Zs are the demographic groups that are least likely to get vaccinated.
Despite the COVID-19 vaccine being available to the general population since March 5, data provided by the CMO shows that, to date, less than 20 per cent of individuals in the 16 to 30 age group have been inoculated.
However, Lee explained that the hesitancy among younger demographic groups are consistent with global trends, noting that statistics show young people being less confident that the vaccine will protect them against COVID.
Explanations for the hesitancy among people under 30 include that they are the demographic groups least likely to die from the virus and that they are the least concerned about the pandemic.
According to data from out of the United States a mere 22 per cent of those under 30 are confident that the vaccine will protect them against COVID, compared with 49 per cent of those over 50.
“Given infection is less severe in younger populations and they don’t think a vaccine will do them much good anyway, it makes sense that a vaccine might be a harder sell,” read the findings of a study conducted by VeryWell Health.
In Cayman, approximately 41 per cent of the estimated population (26, 321 people) have received at least one dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, while 12,824 have received both doses.
