KC’s Mullings extends world Under-20 lead in discus throw
Kingston College’s Ralford Mullings extended his world Under-20 lead in the men’s discus throw after he recorded a new personal best 63.69m in the Class One event at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Qualifying Trials 2.8 at Excelsior High School on Saturday.
Three men went over 60.00m, in the event that was moved from G C Foster College late on Friday after the Government had reduced the maximum numbers of people gathered at any one venue from 400 to 100, forcing the organisers to add three new venues at short notice.
The move appeared to have little if any effect on the throwers, both male and female, as they had a field day with a barrage of outstanding performances, with Jamaicans filling out the top four on the World Athletics men’s Under-20 discus rankings as of Saturday.
Holmwood Technical High School’s Class Two thrower Cedrick Williams stole the show with a superb 51.27m, better than the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Championships record 46.69m set in 2018 by Vere Technical’s Marie Forbes and leads the global Under-18 rankings.
Mullings had taken the world lead at Excelsior on February 27, with a throw of 62.23m and added nearly a further metre and a half on Saturday, the big throw coming in the final round after he had surpassed the 60.00m mark in the previous round.
Edwin Allen High School’s Trevor Gunzell jumped into second place with his personal best 60.62m, followed by Clarendon College’s Brandon Lloyd’s 60.01m, while Kingston College’s Javon Osbourne actually slipped down into fourth place with his new personal best 59.09m, beating the 58.14m he had set two weeks ago.
Calabar High School’s Kobe Lawrence improved to sixth place on the World Athletics Under-20 shot put rankings with his new personal best of 18.01m, to beat Edwin Allen’s Christopher Young’s 17.14m, with Calabar’s Denz Simmonds third with 16.53m, below his personal best 17.02m set two weeks ago.
Young took the javelin open with 59.09m, just beating St Jago High School’s Andre Raymond (58.91m).
Calabar High’s Delano Lawrence won the Class Two discus throw with 55.93m, his best-ever mark, taking him to fourth in the world in the Under-18 age group, beating St Jago High’s Shaiquan Dunn, who improved to number six in the world with his new personal best 55.16m, and Jamaica College’s Zachary Campbell moves into 12th place on the global list with 53.12m on Saturday.
Dunn won the Class Two shot put with a personal best 16.03m, followed by Campbell with 15.89m and his Jamaica College teammate Josh-Ty Brown’s 15.10m.
Holmwood’s Williams is also ranked number six in the Under-20 category and got her winning throw early in the competition, in the third round and also had another throw over 50.00m.
The Edwin Allen pair of Damali Williams (47.34m) and Rochele Solomon (43.38m) filled out the top three spots in the discus as Clarendon College’s Roxene Simpson, who won the Champs Class Two title in 2019, won the Class One event with 46.38m, ahead of her teammate Kimola Hines (45.38m) and Edwin Allen’s Kadine Brown (44.75m).
Solomon won the Class Two shot put (3kg) with 15.86m to be third in the world and was followed by St Jago’s Tafada Wright (14.69m) and Rickea Atkins of St Catherine High (14.06m).
Monifa Edwards of Edwin Allen won the Class One girls’ shot put with 12.77m. Wolmer’s Girls’ Aaliyah Whyte was second with 12.15m and Indian national Krishna Jayasankar was third with 11.86m.
Hydel High’s Akelia Wilson won the Class Three discus throw with 33.19m, well ahead of St Jago’s Rehanna Biggs’ 30.41m and Edwin Allen’s Shamoye Morris (29.87m).
Latavia Galloway of St Jago won the girls’ javelin open with 35.72, St Catherine High’s Natalie Albert was second with 31.44m and St Jago’s Chrisal McCarthy was third with 31.12m.
