Celebrate Mom This Mother’s Day In The Midst Of Coronavirus
Mother’s Day is the traditional day to really show appreciation to the maternal figures in our lives. Whether it’s your birth mother, your grandmother, an aunt, a father-who-mothered-you or some other special person, honouring that person may look a lot different in 2020 given changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Luckily, there are ways to be creative and make Mother’s Day memorable regardless. You can do simple acts of kindness from your home or take part in socially distanced activity. In the age of self-quarantine a little can go a long way.
Here are four ideas worth trying:
1. Virtual dinner/brunch with Grandma
For their own safety many families have taken the hard decision of limiting contact with their grandparents. Considering this move, many families will be celebrating grandma virtually this year by hosting online dinners utilising one of the many platforms which help to keep people social while maintaining the requisite distance. Should you opt for this way of connecting, please ensure that grandma’s Internet and smart devices are fully operational and ready to connect for the virtual get-together. An added bonus is that family members around the world can be present too. (If grandma doesn’t have a smart device now might be the perfect time to gift her one and teach her how to use it!)
2. Deliver a quarantine care package
The virtual world isn’t for everyone, and your mom may be craving some of her favourite treats. If you don’t live at home anymore, you can still make your mom her favourite meal while practising social distancing. Whip up one of your best brunch recipes and drop the meal off with a bouquet of flowers and beautiful handwritten message.
3. Dining in is in
Consider upping the ante this Mother’s Day by creating a stunning tablescape to pair with your greatly improved quarantine culinary skills. Create the perfect restaurant ambiance at home by setting the table with a beautiful arrangement of fresh flowers from your garden or, if you’re not fortunate enough to have a green thumb, silk flowers that provide an all-year bloom are a perfect substitute. Just remember that not going out to eat doesn’t mean you can’t have a meal in style. Go the extra mile with coordinating table linens and for an added oomph be sure to include cloth napkins.
4. Make her extra-comfortable
If your mom is anything like mine, she’s accustomed to being active and mobile and the limitations on her movement caused by the pandemic may be a source of great distress. Since there’s not much we can do about the restrictions for now, one solution is to make sure mom is extra comfortable at home. Think about giving her a stylish and comfortable reading chair in which she can catch up on her favourite magazine, the Style Observer issue, or the latest romance novel. If mom is house-proud consider giving her some new accents or accessories for her living room (and her spirits) as an extra lift!
