My Kingston – Dr Douglas Fletcher
What is your middle name?
Hugh Brady.
Did you choose medicine or did medicine choose you?
I definitely chose medicine. I wouldn’t say I was ever innately drawn to it; I was enticed largely by its level of difficulty. I knew I’d have fun with it.
What do you consider to be the biggest challenge faced by today’s medical professionals?
Relative to our context, I definitely think that the biggest challenge we face is the limited resources. We lag behind first-world medical technologies in a lot of areas that could really enhance patient mortality and morbidity. That said, I definitely think that Jamaica has the quality of doctors, capable of managing particularly well with what we’re afforded.
Where is your happy place?
My happy place is most definitely on a beach at midday (on a weekday, haha) with my closest friends and a glass of Appleton Reserve in my hand.
Nature or nurture?
Both, for sure. I can only believe that the two have a synergistic effect in developing any individual.
Do you think it is more important to be liked or respected?
Hmm, sounds weird to say out loud, but probably, being liked. Though I think that that answer respective to each person is dependent on your personal life philosophy. Mine largely dictates that being liked begets its own respect, which requires me to balance getting what I want without being a pushover or stepping on any toes. I like to believe I’ve got the hang of it. It’s just easier to get people to do what you want if they like you.
What is your greatest fear?
Being on my deathbed and regretting the way I lived my life.
What book do you recommend most to others?
The entire Harry Potter series.
What has been the hardest lesson to learn?
That consistency has the advantages that it has because it has the difficulty that it has.
What food sums up happiness?
Ambrosia — I swear I’d name my firstborn after it!
X6 or Porsche?
X6. It’s more of a symbol thing.
Picket fence or high-rise?
For this bachelor phase of my life: high-rise. Ultimately, picket fence, though.
What is your preferred cologne?
Valentino.
Safari or cruise?
Cruise. I’m more of a relaxing tourist, rather than a sightseeing one.
What would most surprise people about you?
How much I love my own company and how much of my time I spend alone.
What have you never understood?
Why ‘flammable’ and ‘inflammable’ mean the same thing!
Who do you most admire and why?
My mother! I’m very well aware of how clichéd this is about to sound, but she has been through so much, and has had to make so many sacrifices, making four very successful children, almost entirely by herself, keeping her head up the whole way. She’s inspired such optimism, ambition and determination in all of us. She’s almost literally Superwoman incarnate.
