McDonald’s reintroduces J’can flavour to its UK menu

McDonald’s reintroduces J’can flavour to its UK menu

McDonald’s may no longer have a restaurant in the Jamaican market, but that is preventing it from giving some Jamaican-inspired flavour to its customers in the United Kingdom.

Various English media have revealed this week that McDonald’s in the United Kingdom (UK) will be reintroducing the Jamaican Chicken burger. McDonald’s UK is actually replacing its Indian Chicken and Canadian Stack with the Swiss Stack and Jamaican Chicken.

“The Jamaican chicken burger contains two pieces of succulent crispy chicken, Pepper Jack cheese, and a sweet and spicy jerk sauce,” reported the Manchester Evening News. “Each burger comes in at 644 calories.”

Other ingredients include the jerk bun, cool mayo, lettuce, streaky bacon and red onion rings.

The menu item started selling last week Wednesday and will continue its run until November 19.

“Weight watchers will also want to know the Jamaican Chicken has 644 calories, which is around a quarter of your daily intake if you’re a man,” The Sun newspaper informed. “Men are recommended to consume no more than 2,500 calories a day, while it’s 2,000 for women.”

The Jamaican Chicken burger is part of McDonald’s successful annual Great Tastes Of The World promotional campaign, and this year is not the first time that it has been featured in the campaign.

In 2018 McDonald’s UK ran a television advertisement for the Jamaican Chicken, featuring an English couple arriving on a beach in Jamaica.

“It’s perfect,” says the wife in reference to the Jamaican scenery around them.

However in the next scene the couple is seen struggling to cope with loud party music coming from the beach each night. The advertisement concludes by saying “sometimes a taste is all you need — like the spicy Jamaican Chicken from McDonald’s” and then proceeds to describe the burger.

The ad was created by advertising agency Leo Burnett which, according to business magazine Campaign,  shares “one of the longest-standing relationships in British advertising” with McDonald’s.

This year, LBBOnline (Little Black Book), a website focused on advertising creativity published that “building upon the success of the previous six years, Great Tastes of the World encourages McDonald’s customers to flirt with adventure through a range of delicious burgers inspired by ingredients and flavours from around the world.”

“As part of the ‘Great Tastes of the World’ campaign, a series of TV spots use arresting visuals to show how the exotic flavours of these limited-edition burgers can transport customers from humdrum everyday routine, to exciting new international locales,” the article on the website continued.

A review of comments on Twitter about the Jamaican Chicken burger over the past couple of years will find very mixed reviews.

“That Jamaican chicken burger from McDonalds is my current downfall, heaven between a bun,” tweeted one person in 2017.

“Oi who told @McDonalds to put bacon in a chicken burger an put a Jamaican flag next to it,” complained another Twitter user in 2018. Others were more harsh in their criticism.

The Sun newspaper stated that the Jamaican Chicken burger will “be priced at £4.19 for the individual burger or £5.89 for a medium meal including a drink and chips”.

“Keep in mind that McDonald’s prices vary between restaurants so what you’ll end up paying may differ,” the publication added.

Other items that were included in the Great Tastes of the World this year by McDonald’s UK include the French Stack, the Canadian Stack, the Indian Chicken, the Swiss Stack, the Italian Stack, Cheese and Herb Melts and the Galaxy Salted Caramel McFlurry.

McDonald’s has more than 1,270 restaurants in the UK.
