Cocktails With… Lauren Dear
What’s your drink of choice?
Aperol Spritz.
You have recently returned home and opened L House Events and Florals. Tell us about it and what we can expect.
About four years ago, I returned to Jamaica from New York, where I was in the thick of the New York fashion scene doing hair and make-up. I decided to come back to my home, my roots. Flowers were always a part of my life because I was always in awe of them. Coming back to Jamaica, I couldn’t find the same level of, and attention to, detail in events and in florals. So I decided to do it myself, falling in love with flowers and colour all over again. Thus, L House Events and Florals flourished, establishing a new cool take on events and florals with attention to detail in innovative ways.
What have been the negatives of starting up a business, and conversely, what have been the positives?
I always try to spin negatives into positives so I don’t have many, but I would say, maybe sometimes the learning curve when it comes to logistics in Jamaica. The positive would be feeling and seeing my company grow.
What would your advice be to young people wanting to start a business?
If you’re passionate about the business you are pursuing you can overcome and conquer any obstacle in the way and, trust me, there will be lots!
Who or what motivates you?
My family and each project a client brings me motivate me. I get so excited about bringing to life their desires for their events or florals and this propels me forward.
Were you able to plan an event for five celebs, living or dead, who would they be and why?
Bob Marley: Because who wouldn’t want to create something vibrant for the legend?
Any of the Kardashians: Because they throw some elaborate parties! The sky would be the limit and what event planner wouldn’t want that?
Bianca Jagger: Because of her legendary Studio 54 parties, and anything Studio 54 is very cool.
If Jay Gatsby was a real man: Because, I mean, we all know or imagine from The Great Gatsby how all his parties were!
Heidi Klum: Because her Halloween costumes are epic, so her events must be very outlandish and epic as well.
What makes an event a success?
A happy client.
Where is your happy place?
The Blue Mountains. Something about the cool air and the green around me gives me a sense of calm.
Is it more important to be liked or respected?

What are your greatest fears?
Climate change and crabs.
Animals or babies?
Babies, for sure!!!
What additional talent would you love to have?
Being a home organiser. I would love to do what they do.
