Let’s start by talking about Chronixx for a minute. The reggae star’s anthem I Can is the soundtrack to a recently released short film advert starring John Boyega, for Jo Malone London’s scent A London Gent! Big tings!!

Now on to Tyler Perry, who has had several folks with Jamaican roots (and other lodestars of black excellence) involved in his October to Remember. On October 1 Perry received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There celebrating with the Madea creator were Idris Elba, Crystal Fox, and Kerry Washington, who you know by now is of Jamaican descent. Then on Saturday, October 5, Perry flaunted black excellence at the official opening of his film studio compound in Atlanta.

Tyler Perry Studios sits on 330 acres and is large enough to fit Warner Bros, Disney, Fox and Paramount studios combined, and still leave 60 acres, you know, for whatever. Tyler Perry Studios is now one of the largest entertainment studios in the United States, and Perry himself is now the most successful African-American film-maker in history.

The opening party had over 800 guests, including Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Samuel L Jackson, Iyanla Vanzant, and Will and Jada Smith. During the event, Perry revealed that each of the studio’s sound stages is named after a black luminary of stage/screen. Of course, the Caribbean was represented. Bahamian-American actor Sidney Poitier and Jamaican-American actor/crooner/activist Harry Belafonte had stages named in their honour. Belafonte’s daughter Shari Lynn Belafonte represented him at the do.

Next up, Rihanna has us reeling over yet another creative product. This time: a coffee table book of photographs entitled, yes, you guessed it, Rihanna. Published by mega-publisher Phaidon, Rihanna is comprised of over 1,000 images of the pop princess. According to the press release, the 504-page book will feature dozens of “intimate” photos of Rihanna’s “life as a musician, performer, designer, and entrepreneur”.

There are three editions of the book — a level of ‘extra’, we should all aspire to be. The ‘normal’ hardcover that comes with a steel tabletop bookstand retails for US $175. The luxury supreme edition is signed and comes with a gold-coloured cast-resin tabletop stand, retailing for US $5,550. And, the exclusive signed copy, which comes with a custom marble stand, is already sold-out. Fun fact: Cardi B secured a copy at RiRi’s Diamond Ball for US $111,000. Oh, and Rihanna is on the cover of Vogue, again, in the upcoming November issue. Some watch, while others do.

Two Jamaican models enjoyed the spotlight this past week. Stacey McKenzie on the pages of iD magazine, and Naomi Campbell had a feature (duh!) in the WSJ Magazine, entitled “Naomi Campbell Knows It All”.

Finally, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Eva Marcille, who many of you may remember when she won the third cycle of America’s Next Top Model as Eva Pigford, posted photos of her maternity shoot on Instagram. Why is this of interest to SO2, you ask? Because she entrusted her look to Bahamian-born celebrity couturier and Mission Catwalk alum Theodore Elyett! Enough said!

Etc shout-out to Greta Constantine (helmed by Jamaican-Canadian designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong) whose Anysia dress graced the defined back and shoulders of Angela Bassett for her appearance at the Rape Foundation annual brunch in Beverly Hills recently.
