#Doha2019: Tajay Gayle secures Jamaica’s first gold medal
Jamaica’s
Tajay Gayle leapt 8.69 metres to win the men’s long jump at the World
Championships in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday. He captured the gold medal, the
first for the island at the event.
Gayle put
together the best two jumps of the final, as he made the winning jump on his
fourth attempt, after he had leapt 8.46 metres with his first attempt, which
was also the second-best jump in the final.
Gayle fouled his second and third attempts and did not attempt the fifth and sixth attempts.
It was the
first time that Jamaica won the men’s long jump title at the World
Championships, with James Beckford winning the silver medal twice. It is the 10th
best long jump of all time.
