#Doha2019: Tajay Gayle is happy to win gold for Jamaica
After making
history for Jamaica, Tajay Gayle is a happy and grateful man.
On Saturday,
Tajay leapt 8.69m in the men’s long jump to win gold at the World Championships
in Doha, Qatar.
“This 8.69m
jump was a perfect jump for me. I am very grateful for that. I am the first
Jamaican to give my country a gold medal in the long jump. Breaking the
national record is great,” he said.
Despite his
good fortune on Saturday, Tajay struggled on Friday, barely making it into the
long jump final with a leap of 7.89m. For the final, he said that his plan was
to avoid distractions.
“I just
focused on one thing. I did not let anything disturb or distract me. I was
focusing on what I was supposed to do, that was the main thing. Yesterday, I
was overthinking some stuff. But there is nothing to think about on the run-up,”
he said.
Now that the
final is over, Tajay’s celebration will probably be low-key.
“I do not
know how I will celebrate tonight, maybe watch a movie,” he said.
