Madrid derby – Real take on Atletico
There is going to be fireworks in the Spanish capital and at Old Trafford this weekend as the Madrid derby between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are set to light up the Wanda Metropolitano tomorrow.
Then on Monday the “Theatre of Dreams” is going to be fully lit as Manchester United welcome the high-flying Arsenal for an expected thriller.
Event # 1
The first Madrid derby of the new campaign takes centre stage in Spain tomorrow as third-place Real Madrid make the short trip across town to face their sixth place city rivals Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid had a disappointing 0-0 home draw against Celta Vigo last weekend, however, their home form has otherwise been excellent as they have won two of their home games so far this season. They will enter this clash high on confidence as earlier this year they hammered Real Madrid 7-3 in America.
Real Madrid on the other hand, enter this game on a high following their 1-0 away win against a tough Sevilla team. They have now won two of their three away games so far this season.
Real, for sure, are gunning to avenge their loss to Atletico earlier this season and with the team looking more cohesive as the season heats up.
Neither side has thrived in this derby recently, as only one of the last five games have produced a winner. Real won 3-1 the last time both sides met. Before, Madrid’s two biggest clubs played out four consecutive draws.
Key Stats
Atletico Madrid — have avoided defeat in five of their last six matches against their rivals Real Madrid, while their last head-to-head meeting, they thrashed Real 7-3.
Real Madrid — are four places above Atletico in the table, however, the gap is only one point. While they have only lost just three of their last 10 games.
Both sides — Both sides are from Spain’s capital, however, Atletico are known as the mattress makers, because of their working-class background, while Real are referred to as the team of the government as they attract more upper-class supporters.
The betting tip. Draw – with both teams scoring.
Event # 2
The “Theatre of Dreams” should come alive this Monday as Manchester United host a resurging Arsenal side in what could be a defining game for both teams as they both hope to win the title this season.
United came in for more criticism after another poor away performance in their 0-2 defeat at West Ham last weekend. While Arsenal head to Old Trafford buoyed by a come-from-behind 3-2 win at home to Aston Villa, having played the entire second half with 10 men.
It has been an extremely poor couple of weeks for Manchester United as they sit eighth in the tables on eight points from six games. Their loss at the London Stadium means they have won just once in the league since their opening day demolition of Chelsea. The Red Devils have not won on their travels in the Premier League since February — a run of seven matches equalling an unwanted club record. Encouragingly for the Reds, they will be at home for this mega-clash, but the fact that they have failed to score more than one goal in their last five league matches will be cause for concern for the fans.
Arsenal ended a run of successive 2-2 draws against Tottenham and Watford by edging Aston Villa 3-2. And are heading to Old Trafford high on confidence as they are meeting a United team low on confidence now.
Leading striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, will be key for the Gunners as he has played every minute of every game this season, and has scored seven goals in as many matches. At the other end though, Arsenal’s defence has managed just one clean sheet in their last 11 Premier League games dating back from last season which will give United some hope for the win at home.
Key Stats
Manchester United — have scored 15 goals in their last 14 games, they are averaging 1.07 goals per game. Worryingly though, United have only two wins in their last 12 Premier League games.
Arsenal — have scored 21 goals and in their last 14 games – amazingly though — the Gunners haven’t won a game at Old Trafford since 2006.
Both Teams — both sides last met in March this year, with Arsenal winning 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
