Chemical spill in Rio Cobre forces shutdown of NWC plant
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Water Commission (NWC) is advising that the Spanish Town Treatment Plant in St Catherine has been shut down due to a chemical spill within the Rio Cobre.
NWC said customers will experience no water or low water pressures until conditions are favourable to restore inflows to the plant.
Affected areas include; Spanish Town, Westmore, Hampton Green, Lakemore Gdns, Newton Avenue, Nugent Street, McCoy’s Land, Mayfair Mews, Brunswick Avenue, Job’s Lane, White Water Meadows, Hartlands, McCooks Pen, Leiba Gardens, Sydenham Gardens, Wedge Wood Gardens, Willowdene Housing Scheme and Hopedale Housing Scheme.
Noting that no contaminated raw water entered the treatment facility or pipelines, NWC said it is closely monitoring the situation and will make any possible adjustment to service the affected areas with water supply.
