Three new champions at CUMI Come Run
SANDY BAY, Hanover — Three new champions were crowned at the 11th Annual CUMI (Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill) ‘Come Run’ held at Tryall Club in Hanover on Saturday.
Tyrese Reid from Rainforest Seafoods and Ingrid Blackwood from UCT Steppas dominated the 5K races in the male and female categories respectively, while Rochelle Smalling won the 10K ahead Karlene Blagrove, the four-time champion, in the female category.
Rainforest Seafoods’ Kemar Leslie retained his 10K championship title.
Leslie, a three-time CUMI champion, dominated the race in a time of 37 minutes and 48 seconds.
“This year I came to run for a purpose. I lost my brother in The Bahamas on Tuesday and so this win is for him. As usualthis is a challenging route and I decided to run it smart,” he said after crossing the finish line.
Smalling, who is a fitness instructor at Grand Palladium, said she was elated.
“The route was challenging, but I was in training, so I prepared myself. I’m totally supportive of giving back so the run was really worth it,” said Smalling.
Over 700 persons came out to support the event, which raised over $4 million to bolster the CUMI Trust.
CUMI is one of the few organisations in Jamaica that offers a lifeline to the homeless and mentally ill through rehabilitation efforts.
