Run to save a life
Organisers of the Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI)/Jamaica Reach to Recovery Pink Run are urging persons to show their support for the fight against breast cancer by signing up for the ‘Tutus and Tall Socks, Colour Edition 2’-themed 5K Run/Walk slated for Sunday, October 27.
The 19-year-old run has generated over $10 million to help raise awareness and much-needed funds for the Jamaica Cancer Society’s support arm, Jamaica Reach to Recovery.
Chairperson of Jamaica Reach to Recovery, Carolind Graham, encouraged Jamaicans to participate in the run that has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of persons affected by breast cancer.
“The continued growth of this event over the years has been inspiring, as we have been able to touch so many lives by raising awareness and funds through this run. I urge everyone to come with your friends and or family and be a beacon of hope to someone whose life has changed forever because of breast cancer,” she said.
Jamaica Reach to Recovery is an affiliate of the Jamaica Cancer Society that provides emotional, psychological and financial support to breast cancer survivors. The organisation consists of volunteers, all of whom are breast cancer survivors, whose roles include providing information and counselling to breast cancer survivors and, by extension, their families and friends.
ICWI President Paul Lalor said the organisation is honoured to be a part of the fight against breast cancer yet again.
“I believe that the run can be a major factor in improved health care for women diagnosed with breast cancer and that is why we have committed to the event, as we are aware that the costs associated with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are within the millions and generally out of the reach of many Jamaican women,” he shared.
Lalor said he was heartened by the support that Jamaica Reach to Recovery has been able to offer through the funds raised from the run.
In addition to being the main sponsor of the event for the fifth year, ICWI committed to contributing $1,000 from each new Road Angel insurance policy sold to the Jamaica Cancer Society from October 2018 to October 2019 as a part of their 50th-anniversary celebrations.
Registration is now open online for individuals and teams. Entry per person is $1,500, $1,200 each for groups of 50 or more. The deadline for registration is Friday, October 18, 2019.
Individuals and groups are encouraged to showcase their pink creativity with their outfits as there will be prizes for the best-dressed team and individual.
