On Fatherhood:
Fatherhood, for me, is a sense of responsibility — a sense of nurturing, a sense of care, a sense of being there for your children. We all know there’s no ‘book’ to teach us how to be a parent. I like to think I’m a role model to my kids. They can look up to me and see what I’ve achieved in my life, and aspire towards doing likewise or even better.
Father to: Ryan Oneil, Chinoy, Dana, Chadwick and Briana
Ages: 34, 32, 29, 22, and 13 years old respectively
What’s the story behind Briana’s name?
Choosing a name for her was a simple exercise. The choice of name was in fact a collaboration between her mom and I. We felt that we wanted a name that would in some way identify with me. We concluded that we would give her a name that would match my initials and one that was modern and cool, capturing the spirit of the era in which she was born. The outcome was as we expected; we were both satisfied. More satisfying is that she loves her name.
What were your immediate thoughts at her birth?
When my daughter was born I felt incredibly blessed. Relieved, too, that she was here safe and healthy. In that moment, I marvelled again at the wonder of a new life. Of course, thoughts of her future also rushed through my mind. As my second daughter, I had a sense that she was going to be the last of my children. That made it extra special for me.
