Joe Biden aims to salvage what Trump leaves of America in 2020, but will they let him?
Just over a month after Joe Biden, who served as President Obama’s vice president, officially entered the American Presidential race, he shows no signs of faltering. Climate change has become a key area in his campaign- a concept that the current president thinks is a myth.
“He has laid out an ambitious climate plan of his own that goes well beyond what Mr. Obama achieved, proposing $1.7 trillion in spending and a tax or fee on planet-warming pollution with the aim of eliminating the nation’s net carbon emissions by 2050” the New York Times reported. “His environmental targets are similar to the goals of the Green New Deal put forward by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, which even the House Democratic speaker has been unwilling to embrace.”
Biden’s campaign for the White House will see him running against the likes of Senator
Bernie Sanders, other Democrats and two Republicans – one of which being Trump. Biden has accumulated almost 50 years serving in America’s politics where notably, he became the sixth youngest senator in American history, was re-elected to the upper house of Congress six times and most recently served as Obama’s Vice President for his two terms.
The 76-year-old politician gave context to his decision to run in a video posted on social media where he rehashed the comments President Trump had made in reference to the deadly fight between white supremacists and counter-protesters in 2017. Trump made the distinction that there were “some very fine people” on either side.
In response Biden said:
“In that moment, I knew the threat to this nation was unlike any I had seen in our lifetime,” adding: “The core values of this nation — our standing in the world, our very democracy, everything that has made America, America — is at stake.”
Biden even goes as far as to make it clear that his run for presidency is on the basis of salvaging the very soul of America:
“We are in the battle for the soul of this nation,” Biden said. “If we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation — who we are. And I cannot stand by and watch that happen.”
However, while his intentions seem pure, the democratic party may not lend itself so easily to him. Now more than ever, democrats and left-wing supporters are seeking diversity and a radical change in the face of America’s leadership. Electing another old, white man may not completely align with this new idea of what America’s leadership should represent.
On the other hand, Trump welcomed Biden to the race with quick Twitter fingers saying, “I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign. It will be nasty – you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate.”
As Biden is perhaps the first true competitor to Trump, the race is certainly heating up.
