Wise Wurdz from dub poet
Wise Wurdz believes that dub poetry is enjoying a revival on the local scene and is deserving of more support from events promoters and other important players in the Jamaican music industry.
“Dub poetry has emerged as a major art form since the 1970s, and is widely respected in places like England, Canada, Europe and Africa. Just like reggae and dancehall, it is a part of our popular culture and should be treated as such. I am calling on our local events promoters to include dub poets and spoken word artistes on the line-up of their events,” said Wise Wurdz.
“There’s a new breed of dub poets and spoken word artistes on the scene who are breathing new life into the local poetry scene. This new breed of poets includes Steppa, Melanin, Richie Innocent and Ras Takurah. Together we are working hard to take dub poetry to new heights both locally and internationally,” he continued.
The dub poets also bemoaned the fact that dub poetry is not getting a lot of airtime on local radio.
“Dub poetry is not widely played on the airwaves; this is an unfortunate situation that needs to be remedied,” he said.
Wise Wurdz is currently enjoying much attention with his single titled Where Are the Warriors which was done in tandem with Richie Innocent.
“I’m thrilled with the response that this single is getting; it’s receiving support from several popular local DJs and it’s also doing well overseas. Richie Innocent and I brought the house down when we performed it at the recently held Dis Poem [Wordz] and Agro Festival in Portland,” said Wize Wurdz.
He has a debut album in the works which is slated to be released early next year. Also, he has a single titled Never See the Trouble Ahead, featuring Toots Hibbert and Richie Innocent, slated to be released in June.
