Shenseea’s Blessed video still doesn’t answer your question
When Dancehall star Shenseea posted a photo on the weekend of herself and another woman in bed, apparently lip-locked, the earth stopped spinning for two seconds to allow the Shengyengs to sip their hot tea.
But the shock soon subsided, as fans quickly remembered how another Dancehall goddess, Spice, played with their heartstrings just a few months ago when she wore a white skin mask to promote her Black Hypocrisy song.
So when Shenseea dropped this picture, with the very vague “Thanks for being here…❣️ #life #love #blessed” caption, apart from the heartbroken men crying in the comments, her fans called it out as promo for her new collab with Tyga- Blessed.
Blessed was released earlier today, and within a few hours, half a million people had run to YouTube to see the explanation behind the image. What did they get?
A hypnotic summer anthem with a dope video to boot. That’s what they got.
But while the video, which is just under three minutes long, kept the viewers’ attention from the first time the Rastaman goes “Ratatatatata” until he closes the video with “Jah RasTafari,” there were no more hints in the video about the star’s relationship, if any, with the woman in lingerie.
We see Shenseea getting out of the bed (as the first line of the song instructs her to), hyping up her gorgeous self in the mirror, then going about her day – horseback riding on the beach, cruising the streets of Jamaica with Tyga, dancing in the back of a random truck, and partying with Rvssian and her many, many girlfriends.
Her daring black spandex-with-chains outfit definitely does stir the rumour pot, and quite intentionally so, but it still doesn’t confirm or deny anything.
On one hand, the video plot could very well be her just waking up in her friend’s bed the morning after that same friend consoled her about something. Her friend is still asleep, so she has to look in the mirror and remind herself that she is the best … best… best… best…
While on the other hand, this is a huge break for Shenseea into mainstream America, and maybe this is a part of the image she is going with – that untouchable, hot Jamaican girl who might be dating your daddy or your girlfriend, so stay on your toes. (Remember Rihanna’s Te Amo? Look how Riri is still hot and untouchable!)
On a third, hand (go figure), maybe that’s her real life girlfriend in the video, and she is coming out to her fans right before our very eyes, but we are too skeptical to believe it. (Just consider it for two seconds, please?)
But in any case, it worked. I can appreciate this PR move. Whether the girlfriend flame is fanned by Shenseea in coming weeks, or left to fizzle out, it created the hype needed to get this collab off to a great start. Even without the speculations, the track itself is fire, and it’s set to burn this summer. Ratatatatatataa!!!!
