Who will take the Premier League title?
Yesterday I made my case for who I predict will be the top four teams of the EPL. While we wait on the matches to resume later today to confirm my predictions, the next question is, who will ultimately take the Premier League title? Will Manchester City retain the title for the second year in a row, or will Liverpool finally win the league after 29 years? They’ve been neck-and-neck for months, and now Manchester City has a narrow one point lead after playing their game in hand against Manchester United which they won 2-0. Manchester City’s next matches are Burnley (away), Leicester City (at home) and Brighton (away). These may seem like easy matches, but Manchester City will have to be careful. Burnley have been amazing with set pieces this year and all they might need is a last minute set piece to deny City some points and thus the title. Leicester City was able to clip Manchester City’s wings earlier in the season, so it’s not far fetched that they will try to do it again. Brighton is currently fighting to stay in the Premier League so may create problems on the last day, if they are in the same position on the last day. Even if they do end up relegated, who doesn’t love some last day drama? They might try to go out with a bang and rip the trophy from Manchester City’s hands if City goes into the match complacent and unassuming. However, seeing that they have the advantage with the point, it is Manchester City’s league to lose. Pep Guardiola will have to make sure that they get maximum points in all three matches, since waiting on Liverpool to drop points in order to relax may be futile. Liverpool is obviously hungry for a title, since they’ve been starving for so long without one. They will spend the remainder of the season attempting to get maximum points from each of their matches. However, the only way they’ll win is if City drops points. Liverpool’s next matches are Huddersfield (at home), Newcastle (away) and Wolves (at home). Huddersfield should be their easiest win because they have already been relegated and have been performing poorly. I doubt they can create something special to deny Liverpool points. Liverpool demolished Newcastle on their previous encounter this season at home, and will have to silence the fans at St. James Park. The game that is of most concern is the game against Wolves. Wolves have a special formula for big teams this season. The recently promoted football club has enjoyed denying Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United points this season, and could do the same to Liverpool. It’s worth noting that in their previous encounter this season Liverpool was able to defeat Wolves, so we know they can beat them. However, Wolves got the better of Liverpool in the FA Cup. Therefore I would say count of Wolves in for some last match day drama. Liverpool is also still in Champions League, and will have to perform at their utmost best in both that and the league. It’s up to Klopp to manage his squad well and motivate the players so that they can finally touch the EPL trophy.
City will winI predict Manchester City will win the league and retain their title because I really don’t see them dropping points at such a crucial time. They’ve also worked really hard to get back on top of the table and aren’t notorious for being bottlers. Manchester City also doesn’t have the added stress of Champions League and this may be advantageous to them.
