Swept Away Easter Clay Court Tennis Champs return next weekend
NEGRIL, Westmoreland — The once popular Swept Away Easter Clay Court Tennis Championships will return next week and the organisers are promising an exciting weekend of tennis and attractive prizes for the winners.
The event was a fixture on the calendar for years until a few years ago when it was discontinued and replaced by another tournament in October, but former Jamaica Davis Cup player Max Brown has decided to resume the tournament.
Brown, who is based in Canada, told the Jamaica Observer in a recent interview that they were expecting “an exciting weekend of good tennis” and said a number of top Jamaican players have shown an interest in taking part in the tournament.
The events to be contested are Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Men’s Veteran (35 years and over), Men’s and Women’s classes two and three, as well as Men’s Pro-Am Doubles.
The winner of the Men’s Open will collect a cash prize of $220,000; the runner-up will get $80,000 with the losing semi-finalists getting $40,000 with prizes being paid out to the top 16 players.
The Women’s Open winner will get $60,000, the runner-up $40,000, while the losing semi-finalists will get $20,000 each.
