Mamdeen stars with four-timer
Despite another impressive win by Stranger Danger to keep his unbeaten record intact in the top-rated Open Allowance event, it was champion apprentice Christopher Mamdeen who stole the spotlight by booting home four winners on the 10-race programme at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Mamdeen opened the programme with an arm-chair ride aboard the Steven Todd-conditioned Phenom over five furlongs (1,000m) straight. The three-year-old bay colt won by 1 ½ lengths ahead of Enedina (Dane Nelson) and Bold Smile (Anthony Thomas) in a time of 1:00.0 minute.
Mamdeen’s second win came in the eighth race aboard Lady In The Arena in a Restricted Allowance event for native-bred five-year-old and upward non-winners of three. Trained by Ray Phillips, Lady In The Arena won by three-parts of a length ahead of Twilight Eruption (Tevin Foster) and Powerofgiving (Hakeem Pottinger) in a time of 1:09.1.
His third came in the very next race aboard the Gary Griffiths-trained Key Witness going 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m). Key Witness won by three-parts of a length ahead of Miss In Kiss (Aaron Chatrie) and Storm Born (Oneil Mullings) in a time of 1:08.2.
The cap came in the next race over five furlongs round aboard Just Trick Me for trainer Alfred McIntosh. Just Trick Me made all to win by 1 ½ lengths ahead of My Little Princess (Omar Walker) and Formal Fashion (Daniel Satchell) in a time of 1:00.3.
With those victories Mamdeen has now ridden 21 winners for the year which places him second in the jockeys’ standings behind Omar Walker who has 24 winners.
Champion jockey Anthony Thomas was not to be left out of riding honours as he booted home three winners.
Thomas won aboard Court Call, giving trainer Nicholas Smith his first career winner in the second race over seven and a half furlongs (1,500m); Luana in the third race over seven furlongs (1,400m) for trainer Ralph Roberts and Aurelia’s Summer in the seventh race over five furlongs straight for owner/trainer Lawrence Freemantle.
Also, veteran jockey Roderick DaCosta won his first race at Caymanas Park in eight years when he piloted Ridewiththemob in the sixth race for trainer Fitzgerald Richards over seven furlongs. DaCosta leaves the island today to resume riding in Canada.
Meanwhile, Stranger Danger, the Wayne DaCosta-conditioned American-bred dark bay gelding, destroyed stable companion Drummer Boy and Houdini’s Magic by five lengths going one mile (1,600m) in the three-year-olds and upward event to remain undefeated in five starts.
Bred by Buffum out of the Dehere mare Casual Kiss, Stranger Danger posted 1:38.0 on a common canter. The splits were encouraging at 24.1, 46.3 and 1:11.2.
The apprentices in training got another chance to showcase their talent in the saddle in the Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Exercise Riders Race over four furlongs (800m) straight.
Victory went to Marshall Porter aboard Awesome Cat, who defeated Song On Track, under Jawara Steadman, by 1¼ lengths.
