The greatest moments at Champs 2019
The ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships came to an end this weekend and it wasn’t anything short of amazing. If you’re like me, you’re already excited for next year’s Champs. Here are some highlights worth reliving: Kingston College winning Boys Champs– Kingston College (KC) have finally regained ownership of the Mortimer Geddes trophy after an almost 10 year drought. They did so in fine style, smashing the total points record by harnessing 395.50 points and leaving their rivals Calabar (313 points) behind in an 80.5 point gap.
Edwin Allen extends their streak– Unlike Calabar High, Edwin Allen was able to retain their trophy on the girl’s side for a sixth straight year by getting 291 points, stepping away from their formidable competitor Hydel who was close behind with 284 points.
Seeing double-Both of the winning schools had twins in the track events that dazzled the spectators. 14-year-olds Tina Clayton and her twin sister Tia Clayton came first and second respectively in the Girl’s Class 3 100m finals. Tina Clayton broke Tia’s age group world record. KC’s Henry twins Gianni and Giovouni were second and third respectively in the Boys Class 2 1500m finals.
Kevona Davis strikes again– Kevona has been extremely consistent this season and did not disappoint at Champs. She copped three gold medals from the 100m, 200m and the 4×1 relay gaining important points that helped Edwin Allen to victory. Kudos to her for repeating her sprint double from last year.
Bellefield High’s athlete breaks record– Tavaughn Martin won the Class Three Boys 1,500m event in the record time of 4:12.50.
Immaculate won a relay– Immaculate Conception stepped past defending champions Edwin Allen, as well as Champs royalty Holmwood Technical and Hydel to win the Girls Class 4, 4×1 relay.
Two words-Wayne Pinnock– Wayne Pinnnock of Kingston College was very impressive at Champs this year. He won gold in the long jump breaking the previous record and also broke Dejour Russel’s 100m hurdles recording copping a second gold. He collected his third gold medal of the night after running the first leg of the Boys Class 1 4×1 relay.
Excelsior’s Ackera Nugent breaks record– Ackera Nugent broke the record for the Girls Class Two 100m hurdles.
Calabar High athlete breaks 32 year meet record– Kimar Farquharson beat Tyrice Taylor of Enid Bennett high school, the favourite, in fine style demolishing the record for the Boys Class 1 800m.
St Jago’s Vashaun Vascianna broke his own record – Vascianna broke his own record in the Boys Class 2 100m hurdles to collect gold in fine style.
Ashanti Moore’s under 20 World leading time- Ashanti Moore won gold in the Class 1 100m with a world leading under 20 time of 11.17s. She also went on to win gold in the 200m securing valuable points for Hydel High.
