Elderly women hurl stones at each other
Two elderly women who hurled stones at each other in February were unable to agree on mediation when they appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Friday.
Gloria Rashford, who made it clear that she did not need an attorney to defend her, pleaded guilty to hitting her neighbour with a stone.
Rashford, who agreed to mediation, told the court that the stone throwing was as a result of a long-standing feud between her and the complainant’s family.
Admitting that she hit the complainant, Rashford said the feud has being going on for 33 years.
“Both of us throw stones; she started it,” Rashford said, pointing across the courtroom.
“What was she doing at the time?” Parish Judge Chester Crooks asked.
“She was standing. My stone hit her and her stone stop,” Rashford replied.
Judge Crooks’ attempts to offer mediation were unsuccessful.
“No matter what sentence I give her the problem will still be there. The good thing about mediation is that you can put all the things on the table,” Crooks stated.
“No, your honour, “ the complainant insisted.
In addition to that, the woman told the court that she paid close to $7,000 to get medical attention. She also told the court that her medication cost $4,000.
Prior to setting a sentencing date, Crooks told the accused woman that the complainant needs $20,000 to cover her medical expenses as well as pain and suffering.
Rashford, who only had $15,000, paid over the money in court.
She’s expected to return to court on April 4 to pay the balance.
