Man-U seeks redemption in second leg of PSG face-off
The most exciting European club football competition, the UEFA Champions League returned on February 12 with the first four first leg round of 16 matches. The matches continue today and tomorrow, with all eyes on the exciting Manchester United vs PSG fixture set to be played tomorrow.
Manchester United was having a great run following the sacking of Jose Mourinho and the introduction of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils went from slipping farther and farther down the Premier League table to sitting in fourth place, surpassing teams like Arsenal and Chelsea, who were many points ahead. Manchester United wasn’t just collecting points but they looked like a brand new team – a team newly inspired and hungry for success.
Paris Saint Germain on the other hand, while are sitting comfortable on top of the Ligue 1 table, were missing their star forwards Neymar and Edinson Cavani. There would have been anxiety surrounding the PSG fans as Kylian Mbappé was expected to lead the attack by himself.
The first leg of the match was at Old Trafford and with PSG appearing to be ‘weakened’ Manchester United were the clear favourites. Manchester United also didn’t seem to be taking any chances based on their line up. They had the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford starting and therefore teasing the idea of a goal filled night and beautiful counterattacks. In addition to that, they’ve never lost a game with Ole Gunnar up to that point.
Unfortunately for Manchester United, their fairy-tale run came to an end with an unlikely goal from defender Presnel Kimpembe, followed by a goal from Kylian Mbappé. Both goals were assisted by ex Red Devil Angel Di Maria who seemed to be fueled by the boos that rang around Old Trafford. While PSG dominated, it would be unfair to say that Manchester United didn’t try. David De Gea stopped many more goals from going in that would have further broken the hearts of the home fans.
Even with two away goals under their belts, PSG still will have Neymar and Cavani out of play and will have to find that fire to keep a trophy-hungry and newly inspired Manchester United from returning an embarrassment at home.
But to make matters even worse for Manchester United, Paul Pogba received a red card and will be missing the second leg of the match that will be played in Paris. The team will therefore have to do their best without the creativity of Paul Pogba to generate the goals they desperately need to advance to the next round.
Who do you think will advance to the quarter finals from this fixture?
