Mt Alvernia continue dominant run in girls basketball
BROWNS TOWN, St Ann — Former champions Mt Alvernia High continued to steamroll the opposition in the ISSA Western Conference Girls Open basketball after beating second-placed William Knibb Memorial 46-29 in their return round game played at York Castle on Friday for a seventh-straight victory.
Mt Alvernia High had won the first game between the two teams 54-40, but William Knibb were on a roll with some high scoring games and were expected to give the leaders a good game.
In the second game on Friday, Herbert Morrison Technical snapped a two-game losing skid with a big 74-8 win over the hosts, their biggest offensive output of the season.
Mt Alvernia lead with a perfect 14 points and have secured their place in the semi-finals, followed by Herbert Morrison and William Knibb Memorial, both on 10 points. Muschett are next on six points, same as York Castle.
It was Mt Alvernia High’s third win in the week after beating Muschett High 61-24 at Cornwall College on Monday, they beat York Castle High 43-10 at Muschett on Wednesday.
On Friday, Tiana Wilson just missed a triple-double by a steal in her first game of the season with 14 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals while Chrisania Thorpe led all scorers with 19 points with Shanna-Kay Andrews getting 18 rebounds.
Shania Wright had a triple-double for William Knibb, 15 points, 14 rebounds and 11 steals.
Kerry-Kay Stephenson also had a triple-double to lead Herbert Morrison in their 66 points demolition of York Castle, scoring 30 points and had 10 assists and 10 steals as Brianna Bruce scored 13 points and Nyome Frater scored 10 points in support.
Serina Parchment scored four points and had 10 rebounds and six steals for York Castle.
