J’can athletes recognised for outstanding US indoor season
A trio of Jamaican athletes was on Friday honoured by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their outstanding performances in the NCAA Division One indoor season that is drawing to a close.
Jumpers Odaine Lewis of Texas Tech and Jordan Scott of the University of Virginia, as well as middle distance runner Marleena Eubanks of Kansas were among those named.
All three have qualified for the NCAA Indoor nationals to be held this coming weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.
Scott, the former Campion College standout who represented Jamaica at the IAAF World Cup in London last year, was named the Male Field Events Athlete of the Year for the Southeast Region.
Scott broke the University of Virginia indoor records in both the triple and long jumps this season, winning his second triple jump title at the ACC, and was third in the long jump.
His 16.90m done at the Tiger Paw invite at Clemson on February 9 is the second best in the county and extended his school record, and he then took the long jump with 7.58m at the ACC Championships a week ago.
Lewis, formerly of Cornwall College became the fifth-straight “Red Raider” to win the award for the Mountain Region, after being ranked fourth in the long jump with 7.99m, fourth best all time for Texas Tech and seventh in the triple jump with 16.63m, and third-best all time for the programme.
Eubanks, the former Edwin Allen star, was named the Female Midwest Region Runner of the Year after she broke the Kansas and Big 12 Championships meet record in the 800m, running 2 minutes 03.99 seconds, and is the fifth best in the NCAA Division 1 this year.
Eubanks was also part of the Kansas University women’s distance medley relay team that broke the school record, running 10:58.31 in mid-February with the Jamaican on the anchor leg.
She also ran on the school’s 4x400m relay team that was second at the Big 12 championships.
