MBU, RENO IN CELLAR CLASH
FROME, Westmoreland —Western-based clubs Montego Bay United and FC Reno, both fighting for their Red Stripe Premier League lives, will clash at the Frome Sports Complex in a crucial third round fixture on Sunday, starting at 3:30 pm.
The two former champions are at the foot of the points tables, separated by a point, but while Montego Bay United (MBU) are unbeaten in their last three games since the arrival of Brazilian coach Luciano Gama, FC Reno have earned one point from their last four games.
FC Reno are on 23 points at the bottom of the tables while MBU are on 24 points and coming off a big 2-1 come-from-behind victory over title contenders, Cavalier FC, at home on Sunday.
After their previous two games ended in stalemates, the teams will be seeking wins against each other for the first time this season and MBU will go into Sunday’s game with the better momentum.
FC Reno lost their 13th game of the season on Monday night, losing 0-1 to Waterhouse FC, despite a solid performance and will hope home ground advantage will work in their favor.
The game will feature the worst offense-FC Reno’s with just 20 goals in 28 games, against the worst defence- MBU’s allowing 44 goals, the most conceded by the team in an RSPL season.
Gama is not seeking style points however and told the Jamaica Observer West after Sunday’s dramatics at Wespow Park, wins are what matters most.
“In this situation that we are we don’t tend to look for nice performances. Of course we prefer a game where we control everything,” he said, praising his players for their fighting spirit.
It’s one game at a time he said, “This situation that we are in we must approach game by game and these three points are very important. We are going to start working again this week to correct something and go into the next fight against Reno.”
Gama said he was able to put in a system that the players are catching on to and that resulted in the improvements, “Now we have a kind of system that we play and they know where we have to be defensively when we don’t have the ball and they must improve when they have the ball and know how to create opportunities.”
The veteran Dino Williams showed flashes of his brilliant best with a bicycle kick in the 63rd minute, after his penalty kick was saved, to secure all three points.
Cavalier FC had taken the lead in the third minute but MBU equalised in time added on in the first half through Nazime Matalie-Grant.
