Innswood brush aside Wolmer’s in Grace Shield cricket
DEFENDING champions Innswood defeated Wolmer’s Boys’ by five wickets in the second round of the 2019 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Grace Shield Urban High Schools cricket competition played at Chedwin Park last Friday.
Other winners were former champions Excelsior High, Kingston College (KC) and Ardenne High.
Carlos Brown from Innswood made 112, Excelsior High’s Brandon English hit 102, and Darnel Williams of Kingston College made 104 not out to round out the top performers on the day.
The final round of matches will be played next week Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, with Kingston College facing Excelsior High, and Waterford High opposing Calabar High from Zone D.
In Zone E, St George’s College face Innswood High and Wolmer’s Boys’ take on Ardenne High. Matches are scheduled to start at 10:00 am each day over two innings.
At Chedwin Park, Innswood defeated Wolmer’s Boys’ by five wickets. Wolmer’s were bowled out for 88 runs in their first innings as Carlos Brown took four for 22, Oneil Weir, three for 16, Kevin Peterson, three for 25. Innswood replied with 159 all out with Brown scoring his ton which included nine fours and three sixes, while Matthew Comrie took five for 66 and Rajiv Redhi three for 58.
Innswood had taken a lead of 71 runs over Wolmer’s who were bowled out in their second innings for 169. Shemar Phillips 38, Comrie 36 and Sanjay Brown 35. The wickets were shared amongst Weir with four for 49, Peterson with three for 42 and Carlos Brown with two for 63.
Needing only 99 runs to secure an outright win, Innswood reached 100 for five wickets in their second knock as Brown made 85 not out with eight fours and one six.
At Calabar High, Excelsior High won by an innings and 58 runs through English top score of 102.
Calabar batted first and made 145 all out with Raewin Senior getting five wickets for 50 runs. Excelsior replied with 312 for three wickets declared, including English’s century and Kirk McKenzie’s 89.
Trailing by 167 runs, Calabar were bowled out for 109, with Akeem Malcolm taking four wickets for 27 runs and Senior chipping in with four for 44 runs.
At Kingston College, North Street, the home side defeated Waterford by 148 runs.
KC were bowled out for 126, batting first, with Rayheem Ellington scoring 22, as Richard Berry took four for 24, Michael Cunningham, three for 30. Waterford in their reply were bowled out for 107 with Raheem Levy getting 31, while Matthew Bell took five for 31 and Akeil Hanchard, two for 14.
KC piled up the runs by making 281 for four wickets declared, with Williams scoring 104 not out, Ricardo Thompson 95, Steven Wedderburn 53, against Berry, who took two for 65.
Given 300 runs to make for an outright, Waterford were bowled out for 142, with Daniel Brown 41 and Berry 31 being the biggest contributor, as Bell took five for 40 and Rayheem Ellington supported with two for 20 runs.
At Ardenne High, the hosts defeated St George’s College by 64 runs.
Ardenne made 160 all out in their first innings with Joel Williheimas scoring 56, William Thomas 46 not out against Nicholas Lewin, who took five for 40. St George’s replied with 146 all out with Geordae Seymour scoring 83 runs as Thomas captured six for 42.
With a small lead of 14 runs, Ardenne were bowled out for 119 in their second innings, with Christopher Green top-scoring with 41, while Lewin captured eight wickets for 25 runs. St George’s were given 132 runs to win but were bundled out for a paltry 68 runs, with Green taking four for 24 and Thomas four for 44 runs.
