SO2 & 3 — Sunday, February 24
Last Tuesday morning the news broke that legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld had died. An outpouring of love came from around the world — fans, editors, models and fashion industry notables reminisced about the many ways that Lagerfeld touched their lives.
British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful said: “He has exerted an incredible influence over the fashion industry over the past six decades, and it goes without saying that the world has lost one of the greatest designers in the history of fashion. But it has also lost one of its greatest teachers.” In Wednesday’s Washington Post, fashion critic Robin Givhan reminisced: “When hip-hop style began to transform the way in which young people dressed, he incorporated that ideology — for better and, often, worse — into Chanel.”
Of course, those of Jamaican and Caribbean heritage have been impacted by the visionary and took to social media to express their sympathy. Lagerfeld was an icon and has left large shoes to be filled at Chanel, Fendi and his eponymous label. Rest in power, Karl.

On February 16, the British Film Institute (BFI) screened Jamaican film-maker Storm Saulter’s Sprinter at its Southbank cinema. The film, executive produced by Zachary Harding, Jose Bagdonovich and Will Smith, had a sold-out audience! Post screening, English rapper, journalist, author, poet, and political activist Akala moderated a Q&A between the audience and Saulter, actor Dale Elliot (aka Elli the Viner), producer Robert Maylor and Britsh rapper of Jamaican and Grenadian heritage Gaika. Afterwards, Saulter and crew headed to, yes, you guessed it, Tracks & Records UK for an after-party.
