Sweet Like Sugar demonstrated her progress by getting up in time to win a Maiden Special Weight (native-bred three-year-old contest) at Caymanas Park on Saturday.

Sent off as the 1-5 favourite in the seven-horse field and sitting close to the pace from the off, the Traditional bay filly fought off 7-2 third favourite Soul To Cure, with Robert Halledeen, on the line by a neck to win under jockey Omar Walker.

Soul Cure looked the likely winner leaving the furlong pole but Walker kept working and Sweet Like Sugar gained steadily and caught Soul Cure on the wire.

It was Sweet Like Sugar’s second run after finishing second to Top Shelf on September 15, 2018 over five furlongs (1,000m) round. Dora Lee (Reyan Lewis) finished third. A final time of 1:07.3 was recorded.

Soul To Cure was later disqualified and placed fourth for interference to second favourite and fourth past the post, Raw Liquid with Dane Nelson near the 400 metre marker.

“Neither time nor margin of victory means much to us at this point in time,” assistant trainer Peter John Parsard said.

“We know the calibre of this horse and, if she can comes off this good win in tact, we are going to get her ready for the more serious part of the year. The stable is very excited about the promise she holds for future success.

“She’s an animal that has a wholesome attitude towards her training. She came off an injury suffered in her first race and that is the reason we were tentative about bring her back.

“With this good testing run under her girt now, we can now get in some good training to settle her down with her main focus being the 1000 Guineas and then the Jamaica Oaks,” assistant trainer Parsard outlined.
