New wave dub artiste Addis Pablo says his new album King Alpha and Queen Omega is a mix of two generations: his and his father Augustus Pablo’s.

“This album is basically showcasing Dad’s recordings and dub mixing, as well as my work. It’s a bridge between my work and his, and that is really what makes this one different from the others: the combination,” the 29-year-old told the Jamaica Observer.

Pablo, along with his sister Iris, have carried on their father’s legacy. Augustus Pablo is one of Jamaica’s notable roots-reggae and dub producers, as well as an accomplished melodica player and keyboardist. He died in 1999 at age 44.

King Alpha and Queen Omega is co-produced by Addis Pablo Music and Rockers International. It features seven tracks and was released on February 1.

“Well, the album was actually released at the start of Reggae Month, I felt like that was the perfect timing to get it out,” said Addis. “The title was inspired by His Imperial Majesty (Haile Selassie I) and his wife who we [Rastafarians] refer to as the Omega. As you know, we refer to His Majesty as God, and some of the tracks reflect that,” he continued.

The album features singers Earl 16, Junior Delgado and Delroy Williams courtesy of his father’s tapes, as well as roots-revival artistes Protoje, Jah 9, Chronixx and Sizzla.

Addis said the album was a long time coming.

“I had been working on it since five years ago and I’d say that things were actually set. However, four to five months ago I decided that I wanted to have fun and actually get it out there,” he stated.

Previous albums from the artiste include Unfair Games (2013), In My Father’s House (2014), A Double Dose of Dub (2015) and Total Reggae Dub, Vol 4 (2016).

Like his father, Addis Pablo learned to play the melodica at 17. He has another project planned for 2019; it also features various artistes paying homage to Augustus Pablo.

Augustus Pablo (Horace Swaby) popularised use of the melodica in reggae with songs like Java. He released albums including 1976’s King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown, which is regarded as a landmark dub album.
