Bridge collapses, causes disruption in Stony Hill area water supply
ST ANDREW, Jamaica — The Airy Castle bridge in St Andrew collapsed today as a truck attempted to make the crossing, causing water supply disruptions in Stony Hill, Jacks Hill and surrounding areas.
The National Water Commission said sections of its raw water mains that were anchored to the bridge were dislocated during the collapse.
It advised that the operations at the Seaview Treatment Plant, which is supplied by the mains, have since been shut down.
According to NWC, the damaged pipeline will result in the loss of approximately 2.2 million gallons per day that is normally distributed to supply a number of communities.
Affected areas include: Stony Hill, Golden Spring, Jack’s Hill, Stillwell Road, Lawrence Tavern, Tavistock Heights, Manning’s Hill, Bridge Mount, Sunset Avenue, Boone Hall, Mount Ogle, Skyline Drive and Mountain Spring.
These communities will be impacted until the problem is corrected, the company said, noting that an assessment of the damage is being undertaken to determine the earliest possible restoration time.
It said a further update will be provided as soon as this assessment is completed.
