Woman shot dead, estranged husband arrested
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Police say a woman has died from gunshot wounds and her estranged husband taken into custody following a shooting at Seaview, close to Southfield, southern St Elizabeth, early yesterday.
The man, who had been abroad for four years before returning on Monday, was later in the morning held at Norman Manley Airport in Kingston, suggesting that the accused was allegedly trying to flee the island.
According to the police, Moylyn Williams-Toppin, who was a transport operator — driving children to and from school — had entered her vehicle at minutes after 6:00 yesterday morning along with her young nephew when she found a man, who turned out be her estranged husband, awaiting them inside the bus.
Williams-Toppin reportedly started the engine and drove off while engaging the armed man in conversation, urging him to give her the gun. The man, however, demanded she stop the vehicle after which shots were fired, killing her.
Police said the child was not physically harmed.
