Ahead of her London Fashion Week unveiling, Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) prize recipient Grace Wales Bonner, who’s of Jamaican parentage, curated her first-ever art show at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery in London on January 19. The cryptic art collection, which runs until March 17 (it was extended by popular demand), is the first in a new series of annual short-duration projects that Bonner has undertaken.

The 70-piece exhibition, dubbed A Time For New Dreams, was both impressive and unexpected. Bonner married a study of religion, literature, fabric and film with photography, sculpture, sound, and even shrine-like meditation spaces with The New York Times calling it “a primer on a fashion creative process”. A Time For New Dreams gives insight into Bonner’s psyche and state of mind ahead of the launch of her soon-to-be-released eponymous collection during London Fashion Week.

Bonner presented with collaborators Chino Amobi, Black Audio Film Collective, Rotimi Fani Kayode, David Hammons, Michael John Harper, Liz Johnson Artur, Rashid Johnson, Kapwani Kiwanga, Klein, Laraaji, Eric N Mack, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Ben Okri, Ishmael Reed and Sahel Sounds.

Jamaican poet Kei Miller and a choir provided “a special reading” inside the exhibition on Saturday, Feb 9. Also featured that evening was poet and DJ James Massiah, who presented a series of readings, with Abondance Matanda, Zoë Marden and Herb Powers.
