Leaders Portmore beat Cavalier to motor along
CHAMPIONS Portmore United continue to enjoy a consistent 2018-19 season as they secured a second win on the trot by clipping Cavalier FC 1-0 in a keenly contested Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) encounter at Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.
The all-important strike came in the 13th minute courtesy of Javon East, which pushed Portmore — on a five-match unbeaten run — to 50 points.
They are five points ahead of second-placed Waterhouse and third-placed Cavalier, both on 45 points. Waterhouse will be in action against Humble Lion in the Monday night fixture.
Cavalier FC were left ruing their chances after Nicholas Hamilton hit straight at custodian Shaven Paul from the 12-yard spot a mere two minutes in after earlier being brought down inside the area by Portmore’s stand-in captain Rosario Harriott.
That penalty miss later proved costly when East found the back of the net to give Portmore United a crucial lead which they held to the end.
However, the second half was not without some excitement with both teams throwing around their weight in attack with a few colourful plays in patches but neither was able to get the ball between the sticks.
Portmore had a few sailing just wide of the upright while at the other end, Cavalier FC found it hard to beat the gloves of Paul, who did well to deny Hamilton from close range in the 50th and substitute Kimani Arbourne in time added.
