Guyana Opposition hints at possible extension of deadline for polls
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Leader of the main Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Bharrat Jagdeo says he may contemplate extending the three-month deadline by which a general election should be held, if he sees “good faith measures” being taken by the David Granger-led Administration.
Speaking during a news conference yesterday, Jagdeo, a former president, said if Granger announced that preparations for general elections would get underway, only then would the Opposition advise the election commissioners to extend the deadline to July.
Guyana’s Constitution provides for elections to be held three months of the National Assembly’s passage of the no-confidence motion on December 21, however, an extension can be granted.
But Jagdeo told reporters that this is not likely as the president took 18 days before meeting with him after the no-confidence motion was passed.
“They are doing absolutely nothing to show good faith,” Jagdeo said. “In fact, they are encouraging the breach of our constitution,” he said.
Last week, the High Court ruled that immediately after the no-confidence motion was passed, the president and Cabinet should have resigned and remained in office until after elections are held within three months.
The Government has already indicated that it intends appealing the matter all the way to the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).
