Drama at TTJ elections as Lothian romps to victory
A team of police officers interrupted proceedings in response to a reported death threat against Table Tennis Jamaica (TTJ) incumbent p resident Godfrey Lothian during the annual general meeting (AGM) at the University of Technology (UTech), yesterday.
While the AGM was in progress, a team of police officers descended on the venue, and according to a source, the cops were there to verify the authenticity of the supposed threat on the life of Lothian and to investigate a report that individuals were on location with the intent to disrupt the meetings.
After speaking with a number of individuals attending the function, the police officers left without incident.
But after the meeting, Lothian denied knowing of a death threat, but conceded that a contingent of police officers had entered the compound, separate and apart from the four who were on duty from the start of the meeting.
“I have no knowledge about that (death threat),” the TTJ president told reporters.
Lothian retained the presidency in a landslide 71 to four votes over challenger Karen Lym.
Under the revised constitution, Lothian will be the first president to serve a four-year term, moving away from the previous two-year life of an administration.
“The work has just started and I will continued to see to the development of the sport,” Lothian said.
Meanwhile, Lym who is affiliated to the Blue Diamond Table Tennis Club, expressed concerned with the voting process.
“The meeting is unconstitutional as if there are 104 clubs at least you should have a two-thirds majority for a quorum which they did not have at the meeting,” Lym told reporters.
