44/876 is Shaggy’s number
Shaggy has been to the Grammy Awards before, but on Sunday he will attend in two capacities. In addition to a nomination for Best Reggae Album for 44/876 with Sting, he hosts the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony which also takes place Sunday at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.
It will be streamed live via www.grammy.com from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The main show airs from the Staples Centre in Los Angeles at 8:00 pm.
“It’s a great honour to be hosting the Grammy pre-show! It feels good to represent my country and my culture,” Shaggy said in an interview with the Jamaica Observer‘s Splash.
44/876 is Shaggy’s sixth nomination for Best Reggae Album. He won in 1996 with Boombastic, his platinum-seller for Virgin Records. He was nominated in 2006 for Clothes Drop, in 2009 for Intoxication, 2012 for Summer in Kingston, and in 2015 for Out of Many, One Music.
Shaggy and Sting are up against Etana’s Reggae Forever, Black Uhuru’s As The World Turns, Ziggy Marley’s Rebellion Rises and Protoje’s A Matter of Time.
“This project was an amazing experience for me, just on the basis of fun and good vibes. It would be great to win with my big brother Sting,” Shaggy said.
44/876 was named the top-selling reggae album of 2018 in the United States by Billboard Magazine. It has sold more than 52,000 copies and occupied the number one spot on the Billboard Reggae Album Chart for 23 weeks.
Shaggy shared what he is looking forward to most about the Grammys.
“This year I will be taking my eldest daughter with me. I’m excited for her and the experience itself,” he said, adding he has fond memories of his previous visits.
“All of my Grammy experiences have been quite different, yet always a lot of fun. Last year, I had the pleasure of performing with Sting and doing a skit with him and James Corden. This year, I’m really looking forward to hosting the premiere ceremony. I expect it to be a great show.”
