King, Bulli look to continue good form as Scorpions head for Hurricanes
BRANDON King and Dennis Bulli are eager to extend their good form in the West Indies four-day cricket championship when Jamaica Scorpions face hosts Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the day/night match in St Kitts set to start Thursday.
King, the 24-year-old middle-order batsman, made half-centuries in both innings after returning from injury in last week’s four-wicket victory over Windward Islands Hurricanes in Grenada.
Left-arm wrist spinner Bulli, 31, had his maiden 10-wicket haul in first-class cricket in that encounter.
“I’m definitely happy to be performing this well. It’s always good as a player to know that you’re in good form because it just builds your confidence. I’m happy that I came into my first game of the season and I contributed to the win,” King said ahead of yesterday’s departure for the sixth-round match.
“I’m just trying to make runs in whatever match is put in front of me. It’s always just a matter of focus for me; you have to just take it ball by ball… just try to do the best every time you go out there, and that carries me through,” the usually free-scoring batsman added.
Bulli, with only nine first-class matches under his belt since debut in March 2016, said he has new-found desire since his career-best performance.
“That has done a lot for my confidence. I’ve been working very hard, and to be playing a first-class game and getting 10 wickets is a very good achievement. It has motivated me to train even harder, so I just have to concentrate on what I need to do to help the team win more games,” the spinner said.
“I’m looking forward to playing some hard cricket, some disciplined cricket and to be patient. I’m not looking to try and change much… just to stay disciplined and patient and have fun,” Bulli explained.
The Scorpions, coached by interim appointee Robert Haynes and captained by Paul Palmer, have made two changes to the 13-member squad that faced the Volcanoes.
Pacer Jermaine Levy and batsman Andre McCarthy are out, while all-rounder Rovman Powell returns from injury and batsman Jermaine Blackwood is back from West Indies President’s XI duty against the touring Englishmen.
After the Hurricanes clash, the Scorpions are scheduled to head straight for Guyana to battle the four-time reigning champions Jaguars in the seventh-round game to begin February 7.
The Scorpions are last in the six-team league table with 32.6 points, way behind the Hurricanes who are second on 59.8.
The Jaguars lead with 85.6 points, while Barbados Pride (49.6) are third, the Volcanoes (48.4) are fourth, and Trinidad and Tobago Red Force (33) are fifth.
Squad: Paul Palmer (captain), Oraine Williams, Chadwick Walton, Assad Fudadin, Jermaine Blackwood, Kenroy Williams, Aldaine Thomas, Rovman Powell, Derval Green, Brandon King, Reynard Leveridge, Jerome Taylor, Dennis Bulli.
